Getting Started
JEL UP is a hyperlocal social networking app that lets you discover and connect with people within 100 meters of your current location. No swiping, no endless bios — just real-time proximity-based connections.
Open the app, enter your 10-digit Indian mobile number, and verify the OTP sent to your WhatsApp. That's it — no passwords, no email required.
Yes, JEL UP is completely free to use. There are no premium tiers, no ads, and no in-app purchases.
Location is the core of JEL UP. The app uses your GPS coordinates to find other users within 100 meters. Without location access, the radar feature cannot work.
Your exact coordinates are never shown to other users — they only see an approximate distance (e.g. "34 m away").
Radar & Pings
The Radar is the main screen of JEL UP. It scans for other users within 100 meters and shows them as profiles you can interact with. You'll only see users who have their visibility turned on.
A Ping is an anonymous connection request. When you see someone on your radar, you can send them a Ping. If they accept, a chat is created between the two of you.
Yes — to prevent spam, you can send a maximum of 5 pings per 10 minutes. This resets automatically.
A persistent chat is created between you and the other user. You'll receive a real-time notification and can start messaging immediately. Once connected via a ping, that user will no longer appear on your radar.
Yes. When you receive a Ping, you can either accept it or decline it. If you decline, the sender is not notified — the ping simply expires on their end.
Chat & Messaging
No. Once a ping is accepted, the chat is permanent. You can message the other person anytime, just like WhatsApp or any other messaging app.
Yes. JEL UP shows real-time online/offline status. If the other person has the app open, you'll see a green "Online" indicator. When they close the app, it switches to "Offline".
This works app-wide — it's not limited to whether the other person is viewing your specific chat.
Yes. When the other person is typing, you'll see a real-time indicator. Read receipts are also sent when someone views your messages.
No. You can only chat with someone after they accept your Ping. This is by design — JEL UP is built around mutual consent.
Privacy & Safety
No. Other users only see an approximate distance (e.g. "34 m away"). Your exact GPS coordinates are never shared with anyone.
You can toggle your visibility off in the app settings. When hidden, you won't appear on anyone's radar, but you can still access your existing chats.
You can block any user at any time. Blocking will:
- Remove them from your radar (and you from theirs)
- Deactivate any shared chats
- Prevent them from sending you pings
You can manage blocked users from your app settings.
Absolutely not. We never sell, rent, or share your personal data with third-party advertisers or data brokers. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Account Management
You can delete your account from within the app. This performs a soft-delete:
- Your profile is hidden from all users
- All your chats are deactivated
- You can no longer log in
Your data is retained for 30 days in case you change your mind. After that, it may be permanently removed. For immediate permanent deletion, email us at privacy@jelup.app.
Within 30 days of deletion, contact us and we can reactivate your account. After 30 days, recovery is not guaranteed.
Currently, phone numbers cannot be changed in-app. Contact support if you need to update your phone number.
Technical
JEL UP is available as a mobile app for Android (via Google Play). iOS support is planned for a future release.
This could be because:
- No other JEL UP users are within 100 meters right now
- Nearby users have their visibility turned off
- Your GPS signal is weak — try moving to an area with better reception
- You already have an active chat with everyone nearby (connected users don't appear on the radar)
OTPs are sent via WhatsApp. Make sure:
- You have WhatsApp installed and active on the number you entered
- You entered a valid 10-digit Indian mobile number
- You wait at least 30 seconds before requesting a resend
If you still don't receive it, contact support.
